Miami-Dade County committee votes unanimously to restore prayer before Commission meetings at the request of CFC
CFC's “Rally for your rights” at Miami-Dade county commission meeting
brings out hundreds of Christians and fills auditorium to capacity!
MIAMI, FL - The Christian Family Coalition (CFC), Florida’s premier human rights and social
justice advocacy organization, praised the members of the Internal Committee of the Board of
Miami-Dade County Commissioners today for their historic and unanimous vote to restore the
legislative invocation (opening prayer) before all Miami-Dade County Commission and Committee
meetings. At a public hearing held yesterday, Miami-Dade became the largest county in Florida to
remove, and then restore, the legislative invocation (opening prayer) before County Commission
In April 2004, the Board of Miami-Dade County Commissioners stopped the time-honored tradition
of legislative invocations (opening prayers), at the request of former Miami-Dade Commissioner
Katy Sorenson, after a minister prayed "in the name of Jesus". The opening prayer was replaced by
a moment of silent meditation.
However, after replacing Katy Sorenson in 2010, the CFC began a campaign to restore the opening
prayer in 2011. During the summer of 2011, CFC trained forty (40) equality advocates to meet
with, lobby and educate their County Commissioners on the need to restore the legislative invocation
On Tuesday, November 14th, after fifteen (15) long months of hard work and red tape, the CFC
finally achieved its goal when the members of the Internal Committee of the Board of Miami-Dade
County Commissioners voted unanimously to restore the legislative invocation (opening prayer).
A rainbow coalition of twenty-four (24) speakers, representing the rich ethnic and racial diversity of
our community, came before the Internal Committee, to speak in favor of the proposal with
absolutely no one speaking against it.
We would like to thank all the members of the Internal Committee for voting "yes", they are the
following commissioners: Barbara Jordan, District 1, Audrey Edmonson, District 3 (co-
sponsor), Xavier Suarez, District 7, Committee Chair Lynda Bell, District 8, (co-sponsor),
Jose "Pepe" Diaz, District 12, (prime sponsor), and Esteban Bovo, District 13, (co-sponsor).
“People of Faith everywhere are pleased that Miami-Dade County Commissioners acted responsibly
and restored the time-honored tradition of the legislative invocation before all County Commission
meetings, stated Anthony Verdugo, CFC Founder and Executive Director. “This is a victory for all
people in our community".
